Obama and the new commission: Save Darfur by saving Sudan?

Greg Austin argues that the international community must work to empower Sudanese and that a strategy for peace in Darfur requires a broad view that also includes other conflicts in Sudan.

In his column in New Europe, Austin argues that the international community must use collaborative, coordinated strategies to stabilize Sudan, and do so before the country’s 2010 elections.

He urges the European Union to craft more ambitious, results-oriented policies in Sudan and participate in a revitalized multinational effort. Austin further suggests that Chinese, Indian and Malaysian oil companies active in Sudan must accept higher levels of taxation on their earnings for the sake of peace.
