Matthew T. King is an Associate of the Preventive Diplomacy Initiative and senior analyst for the EastWest Institute.  Besides overseeing a new series of Reports on Strengthening Preventive Action in Central America and Southeast Asia, he is currently working on a study of how to ensure conflict prevention efforts and developmental processes can be advanced in parallel.

Mr. King recently led the first Global Conference on Preventive Action, a two year international consultations process on how to shift political attention and resources to early preventive actions, sponsored by the German Federal Foreign Office.  Prior to that, he served as head of secretariat to the International Task Force on Preventive Diplomacy, Chaired by Ambassador Ortwin Hennig, former Commissioner for Civil Crisis Prevention with the Federal Foreign Office. King has also led other EWI projects, most notably on regional cooperation on water in Central and South Asia, and in the Middle East, as well as the establishment of the Parliamentarians Network for Conflict Prevention.   

Prior to joining EWI in 2004,  Matthew worked in the legal profession in Ireland and in the private sector with Ford Motors in the field of change management. He is the author of numerous papers and articles, including New Initiatives on Conflict Prevention and Human Security (EWI, 2008), Civic and Political Approaches to Peace, in R. Cutos ‘Leadership’ (Sage, 2009), Making the Most of Afghanistan’s River Basins (EWI, 2010), Three steps towards effective preventive action (NewEurope, 2010). He received his MA in Peace & Conflict Resolution from the University of Bradford, England, and a Law Degree from the University of Wales.
