EWI Threat Assessment Contributes to Breakthrough in U.S.-Russia Ties
The EastWest Institute’s U.S.-Russia Joint Threat Assessment on Iran has contributed to a significant breakthrough in U.S.-Russia relations with the abandonment of the proposed U.S. missile defense systems based in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The Wall Street Journal reports that the Obama administration has decided against the controversial defense system, which the previous U.S. administration had proposed to protect Europe and the U.S. from an Iranian nuclear threat. The decision was based on “a determination that Iran's long-range-missile program hasn't progressed as rapidly as previously estimated, reducing the threat to the continental U.S. and major European capitals.” This assessment, as cited by The Wall Street Journal, was a major conclusion of EWI’s joint threat assessment.
